About me

A former state legislator and political operative with 40 years of experience, James Marzilli commands a strong track record in public policy and democratic governance. Marzilli now spends his time helping to grow democracy in Burma.

Marzilli was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1990 and held his seat until 2007, when he won a special election as State Senator. He resigned in November 2008 and went to Iraq on a State Department funded project to build democracy.

Jim Marzilli pursued undergraduate studies in politics, economics and philosophy at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst from 1976 until 1980. He has since studied and taught at BU Law School, the BU School of Public Health, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and the University of Massachusetts school of International Relations.

Marzilli worked for the Speaker of the House of Representatives during his university years and after graduation. He won election to the Democratic State Committee of Massachusetts in 1984. From 1984 through 1985, he broadened his expertise as a political consultant, serving campaigns and NGOs.

In 1986 Marzilli was chosen Executive Director of the Cambridge Civic Association, where he took on numerous campaign-based responsibilities for a municipal political party. Since then, he has served as Commissioner of the Arlington Housing Authority and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action.
